We are beginning our exploration of the artist’s studio, which resembles an enlarged cabinet of wonders assembled by a nineteenth-century naturalist.
Lucy Mitchell has been creating art since the 1960s, and has built a monumental body of work that could fill a museum from end to end. We look forward to sharing her various series and ensembles over time, starting with this initial sampling, before unveiling more in the weeks ahead.
Each work is unique, centered around her relationship to the natural world, and the objects and materials collected over decades that have inspired her - and delighted her collectors over the years. All are characterized with her meticulous idiosyncratic mark making and subtly determined vision.

Gourd Vessels and Volumes
The gourds are homegrown in the artist’s vegetable garden, dried and trimmed. Covered with archival paper, watercolor and ink. Sealed with acrylic varnish. Numbered. Each gourd holds one or more found natural objects.
Volumes : Hardwood gessoed, covered with paper, watercolor and ink, Acrylic varnish. Sizes approximate. The wood slices are sculpturally interesting, prepared, then covered in thin painted paper. The hand-drawn designs are stylized, patterned mark making, which has come to characterize the artist’s hand on a variety of objects.
